Leadership & Resiliency

Cowichan Valley Youth Services is offering a new program in the Cowichan Valley for youth 12-17 years of age.  The Leadership and Resiliency Program (LRP) is a school and community based program with three components:  In-school weekly resiliency groups; community volunteer experiences; and adventure activities.

LRP focuses on building three main resiliency areas:

  • Identifying personal strengths
  • Developing healthy peer relationships
  • Learning coping strategies

Resiliency Groups

This component encourages a strong foundation of peer support, coping and problem solving, assertiveness, and positive life skills, amond many others.  Resiliency groups are held weekly and facilitated by LRP staff.

Community Volunteer Experiences

This component focuses on altruism, identification with positive personal roles, developing connections within the community, and helping youth begin to see themselves as agents of change.  Volunteer experiences will occur at minimum once per month, and include activities such as community beautification, projects at a food bank, spending time with seniors, and projects at animal rehabilitation centres among many others.

Adventure ActivitiesRopes Course

Adventure activities occur at minimum once per month.  Activities include ropes courses, kayaking, rock climbing, yoga, martial arts, camping, horse-back riding, and hiking, among many others.  This component focuses on positive risk-taking, overcoming obstacles, and team building.
